Ingredients

  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1 med tomato diced
  • 1/4 cup red onion chopped
  • 1 jalapeno seeded and minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 lime juice
  • 1 tsp bayou city garlic pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt plus more to taste
  • 1/2 tsp tajin optional garnish

Equipment

  • Pestle and mortar
  • Knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Spoon
  • Mixing bowl (optional, for serving) optional, for serving

Method

  1. Halve the avocados, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a bowl.
  2. In a pestle and mortar, add the salt, garlic, and minced jalapeño. Grind them together until you have a rough paste. This step helps to release the flavors and aroma of the garlic and jalapeño.
  3. Add the avocado flesh to the pestle and mortar. Mash the avocado into the garlic and jalapeño mixture until you reach your desired consistency. You can leave it chunky or make it smoother according to your preference.
  4. Transfer the mashed avocado mixture to a mixing bowl (if using). Add the diced tomato, chopped red onion, and cilantro. Stir gently to combine.
  5. Squeeze the juice of one lime over the guacamole. Stir well to combine and adjust salt if needed.
  6. Serve immediately with tortilla chips, as a side for tacos, or as a topping for your favorite dishes.

Notes

  • Adjust the Heat: For a spicier guacamole, leave the seeds in the jalapeño or add more jalapeño to taste.
  • Make it Ahead: You can prepare the base (salt, garlic, and jalapeño paste) ahead of time, but mash the avocados right before serving to keep the guacamole fresh and vibrant.
  • Storage Tip: Store any leftover guacamole in an airtight container with a layer of plastic wrap pressed against the surface to prevent browning. Consume within 1-2 days for the best flavor.
